The main line of the Bridgewater Canal runs for about 38 miles between Leigh and Runcorn, with an arm of about 3 miles to Castlefield, Manchester and a half mile branch to Preston Brook Tunnel.
It is open for navigation throughout its length. The section between Castlefield and Preston Brook Tunnel forms part of the Cheshire Ring.
The "cruise" or virtual tour runs from west to east between Leigh and Worsley, from north to south between Worsley and Waters Meeting and from east to west between Manchester and Runcorn, but includes views of the canal looking in either direction.
The quality of each image has been kept moderately low to enable the pages to load reasonably quickly, although it may take up to 30 seconds for all the pictures on a page to load.

Note on bridge numbers:
The Bridgewater Canal does not have bridge numbers. Each bridge has a name and most bridges have a plate showing the name. The bridge names are used in this virtual cruise.
Some websites and guide books show bridge numbers. These are not officially recognised so if you arrange to meet someone or need to call the emergency services, the bridge name should be used as this is what is shown on the bridge itself and avoids possibly confusion.
