Of the 17 locks on the canal, 12 of them were in staircases, where one lock goes directly into the next. At Nob End, between Kearsley and Little Lever, the canal climbed quickly by two staircases of 3 locks each, with a very short pound between the two.

A small amount of stonework is visible amongst the undergrowth to show the remains of the upper staircase.

Archive photograph showing boats waiting to go down the Nob End Locks. The boathorses can be seen grazing on the right.
The arm towards Bolton is in water above Nob End Locks. The locks run parallel to the path running down to the left. The building is the old canal workshop which British Waterways proposes to restore and turn into a visitor centre.
