Looking back from Old Mill Lane towards the site of Harborough Hills Bridge. A new retail park, including Pizza Hut and Currys, now stands on the site of the former Redfearn's glass works.
Looking along the line of the canal beyond Old Mill Lane. Near the entrance to the Asda store, the canal line is crossed by Canal Street.
Looking back towards the former Old Mill Lane bridge. The canal once occupied almost the full width of the grassed area.
On the south side of the canal at this point stood the Keel Inn - a former boatman's pub which still survives.
The name comes from the Humber keel - a type of barge widely used on the waterways of Yorkshire.
The line of the canal took a sharp right turn around the perimeter fence of the Asda store, following the contour around the hillside. A tram road once brought coal from Honeywell Colliery down to the canal on this corner.
After a hundred yards the canal then took a sharp left turn.
Passing Honeywell estate, the line of the canal survives as a grassy corridor.
Looking back towards Barnsley past the site of Gawber New Colliery, which once stood to the right of the picture.
Continuing westwards, part of the canal line is now occupied by the car park for The Fleets public house.
