Lock 23E, Slaithwaite

Old Bank, Slaithwaite
The lock tail bridge of Lock 23E before the restoration of the canal through Slaithwaite began. This lock had been restored some years earlier. Alongside the lock, the Moonraker floating tearoom has been liftedout of the water for maintenance,

Shortly before the re-opening of the canal, minor repairs and pointing work are being carried out to the chamber of Lock 23E.

The road alignments at the replacement bridge in Britannia Road meant that the stretch of canal between Locks 22E and 23E needed to be at a level slightly lower than the original canal level. There was at one time a suggestion to construct an extra lock with a low rise on this west side of Britannia Road but it seems there was not sufficient room. Lock 22E next to Carr Lane car park had its upper cill lowered slightly. Lock 23E was deep enough to permit a lower water level at its tail end.

The A-frames holding the tail gates of Lock 23E in place have been lowered. The gates have been re-fitted about 9 inches lower than originally to allow for the lowered pound below the lock.

The cill at the tail of Lock 23E has been re-built to facilitate the lowered level of the pound below.
